ANNOUNCEMENT

Ambassadors of Poland, France, and Slovakia at NATO Headquarters on the future of the Alliance

What will be the results of NATO’s Vilnius summit decisions? Has Ukraine’s path to NATO got shorter? What will the allies discuss during next year’s summit in Washington? Answers to these questions will be sought by the participant of a Krynica Forum 2023 panel.

‘The future of NATO – mapping the challenges’ debate, scheduled for 14 September at 4 pm, will be held with permanent representatives from several countries to the North Atlantic Council: Tomasz Szatkowski – the ambassador of Poland, Muriel Domenach – the ambassador of France, and Peter Bátor – the ambassador of Slovakia. The presence of a former permanent representative of Norway at NATO Headquarters, Øystein Bø, soon to be appointed Norwegian ambassador to Poland, is also expected. The debate moderator will be Sławomir Dębski, PhD, Director of Polish Institute of International Affairs.

Ambassadors at NATO Headquarters took part in a debate following a similar format at the Polish House Davos during the World Economic Forum 2023. Side by side with Ambassador Tomasz Szatkowski, ambassadors Jüri Luik (Estonia) and Peter Bátor participated then. The opening address was delivered by the President of Poland Andrzej Duda, who is going to listen to the ambassador’s discussion this time as well.

In an interview for Krynica Forum 2023 organisers, Ambassador Tomasz Szatkowski spoke thus about the role which permanent representatives at NATO Headquarters play: ‘I think it is a very good vantage point for watching the international politics. As an example, since November 2021, before the Russian aggression in Ukraine escalated, NATO ambassador would receive briefings, mostly from the US, showing what kind of threat it was. It is also a place where a sort of internal stance by the political West is hammered out. Matters tied to other organisations, e.g. G7 or the UN, are discussed. EU work is addressed as well. This gives a really deep insight into a gauge of the world’s situation as well as a look into the relations within the Western world. You can also note how the hard and soft instruments are used in international relations – such as firepower, image, or communications’.
